Eco-eficiency & Innovation

We believe that cement production must use clean technologies that constantly improve natural resource allocation and reduce emissions and waste. We invest in R&D to develop new technologies and improve existing technologies to promote eco-efficiency in our processes and products.

Our goals are in line with the Global Environmental Policy and Green Rules and our commitments fall under the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) of the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA), that aims to develop best sustainability practices for the cement industry.

The first energy cogeneration unit in Tunisia

In 2017, we created the first cogeneration unit in Tunisia. Cogeneration consists of recovering the residual heat generated during the cement production process and converting it into electrical energy.

This technology has enabled us to generate 30% of our electrical energy needs by reducing our CO2 emissions by 30,000 tons in 2018.

Our contribution to the circular economy

Circular economy aims at sustainable management of resources where nothing is wasted compared to the current "make, use and discard" model.

The priority is the application of the waste management hierarchy, so that the energy content of waste is recovered, where it cannot be avoided, reused or recycled, instead of being deposited in a landfill. From the point of view of the economic circular, we allow these non-recyclable products to be permanently reused.

Since 2018, encouraged and authorized by Tunisian legislation, Ciments Jbel Oust has invested in new installations to valorize biomass (olive pomace). This is a process where non-recyclable products are eliminated by transforming them into energy while respecting the environment. The non-recyclable products are turned into value and contributing to the reduction of natural resources consumption.
